CT hospitals keeping emergency contraception from rape victims

This is unbelievable. Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Services counselors report that in the first half of 2006, 40 percent of sexual assault survivors weren’t offered emergency contraception.

Some 500 rape victims go to Connecticut hospitals for emergency treatment every year. If the rape counselors are right, that means 200 women and girls are receiving insufficient protection. Sixteen of those women are statistically at risk of becoming pregnant and could, if they don't act fast, undergo surgical abortions later.

This just infuriates me.

I find this infuriating also. But, perhaps more infuriating is the fact that CT Sen Joe Lieberman thinks it is perfectly OK for hospitals to withhold Plan B from rape victims. So my question is, why did NARAL endorse Joe Lieberman in the last election cycle?

I think what annoys me, no angers me, most about this whole issue, is the very same people who are against contraception methods like EC are also against abortions. And once the baby is born, all bets are off in terms of health care, education, and social security. If I were demanding women bring every baby to term against their will, I would have some kind of system ready to help raise those children properly once they come out into a family or situation that isn't prepared to raise them in the right environment. As far as I'm concerned Pro Life people better be foster parents too, or they're just creating a more messed up and complicated system for young scared women and their helpless children.

ok I was pissed off enough to post a lengthy rebuttal to Mr. Chopin, for whatever that's worth.

While I agree with the sentiment, I should point out that while, statistically, only a certain number of the victims will become pregnant, all of them are at risk for pregnancy.

Steve, I went to that page and read the article and most of the comments. Unfrigginbelievable. That is the kind of man-mentality that KEEPS women oppressed. Thank you for standing up and speaking your mind. I'd post a comment myself but I am trying very hard to control my blood pressure w/o medical intervention.

As for EC, are public hospitals allowed to make that choice? They aren't allowed to turn ppl away in emergencies, and I'd consider that an emergency, m'self.....
